Discourse analysis – how to assess bias

Image
The Sun and The Guardian are very different newspapers. The Sun  The Gaurdian There is a process where different stories may be selected for the front pages and others are relegated to the back or are not even included. In this sense, the ideological viewpoint of the institution becomes clear and we start to see their biased opinions. The process of selecting which stories to include involves weighing up their newsworthiness. Bias They are both Bias through selection and omission. In the sun, the 2 main storys are not as serious and are more about entertainment, for example there was a story about the TV show 'I'm a Celebrity'. In contrast, the Gaurdian has selected more formal political story's and a article on insect apocalypse. These could be seen as more serious compared to the sun newspaper headlines.  The placement of the articles is also thought of differently as in the sun there is big advertisements on black Friday deals filling up a lo...

Newspaper Analysis

Image
This Newspaper is a broadsheet newspaper rather than a tabloid and it has a very different kind of approach. For example this broadsheet will have more formal language and more content compared to a often over exaggerated more photo based type of Tabloid. The Daily express logo is in a bold black font. The symbol is of a knight and shield with the English flag. This shows it is defending English views (hence the strap line 'We're Backing Britain') This also symbolises patriotism. This is a centre spread where a photograph takes up the majority or all of the central page. These are not seen so much in modern papers but classified ads were used a lot to advertise pretty much anything and they were all found together normal at the back of the newspaper where it is just text and no pictures.

Logo Analysis

Image
Logo's are a shorthand of a brand/institution's messages, values, and ideology. This Macdonald's logo is very simple with only the colour yellow on a plain white background. The Yellow could symbolise the colour of the fries. The fries are one of the biggest selling points so this might be why they choose this colour as well as how it stands well. It is a simple letter 'm' standing for Macdonald's, they no longer need to write the actual brand name on the logo as it has become so well known and well established that everyone can recognise where this logo is from instantly.
