Discourse analysis – how to assess bias

The Sun and The Guardian are very different newspapers.
The Sun 
The Gaurdian

There is a process where different stories may be selected for the front pages and others are relegated to the back or are not even included. In this sense, the ideological viewpoint of the institution becomes clear and we start to see their biased opinions.
The process of selecting which stories to include involves weighing up their newsworthiness.

Bias

They are both Bias through selection and omission. In the sun, the 2 main storys are not as serious and are more about entertainment, for example there was a story about the TV show 'I'm a Celebrity'. In contrast, the Gaurdian has selected more formal political story's and a article on insect apocalypse. These could be seen as more serious compared to the sun newspaper headlines. 


The placement of the articles is also thought of differently as in the sun there is big advertisements on black Friday deals filling up a lot of the border of the page then the article is placed in the middle. This means the article is smaller and does not stand out as much so they have been bias and chosen to put advertisements filling up lots of space rather than the main articles. In contrast the Gaurdian is all about the news and there ad's like in The Sun. The placement of these articles shows that the more important one are bigger and more central than other smaller less importnat story's which are down the column on the side.

The Headlines in both newspapers stand out more from smaller type subheadings. But in order for the newspapers to choose headlines they would have had to be bias and select the ones they think are more newsworthiness and will draw people in.

The photos included in the main page are chosen because they are seen as more important and people have been bias in choosing which articles deserve to have a photo with them. On the side column we can see other articles are there but these do not have photos with them.

Magazine - Next article analysis - 350ppm

Adbusters uses a lot of culture jamming by sub-verting or sabotaging mass media messages. 350ppm is talking about the amount of polution in the atmosphere. 350 is the safe level but scientists say we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts per million to below 350ppm. There is no anchorage to the image on the left hand side, no headline or subheading to tell you what they mean. This is similar to a lot of pages in the Adbusters magazine. This double page spread shows a binary opposition between the model on the left who is all glamorous and the beggar on the right siting on the ground who is homeless.
