BBC - British Broadcast channel
What is the difference between the BBC and Netflix?
- Netflix is private company
- BBC is a public broadcasting channel whereas Netflix is a streaming serivce
- You need a TV license to watch things on the BBC but you need a subscription to watch things on Netflix
- Netflix is entirely online based
- Netlix commissions others to make more of its content library than BBC tends to
- BBC is mainly British and Netflix is worldwide
- BBC is scheduled programming
- BBC releases series episodes each week whereas netflix shows all episodes and series at once
- The BBC is publicly funded organisation. PBS, Public broadcasting services
- The BBC has a remit to produce a certain amount of new programming every year
- Create and show high quality news programming
- Appeal to a range of people and ideologies
- BBC must appear impartial
- Programs on the BBC do not need to make money. They must represent a range of voices but because its publicly funded it doesn't matter if these shows or radio podcasts aren't popular
- Netflix relies on programs to make money
Woman's Hour
First broadcasted in 1946
Light programme at 2pm
Intended to fit around womanly chores and collecting children from school
After 3 decades it has moved to BBC4 in 1973 where it thrived
BBC Radio 4 - targets a middle class older audience
Late nights womans hour is a spin off - 11pm, started in 2015
