Lesson 7 - Les Revenants

 The tralier expertly targets a mainstream audience by presenting a misleading representation of an experimental TV show. 

Buying merchandise allows audiences to become active uses of a media product, and allows them to communicate their own of the show to other cult audience members. 

The first episode first scene is always very important in a show. Its the hook, makes people either continue watching it or turn it off.

How is this scene for a cult audience?  What makes Les Revenants a cult show?

  • Intense opening music alongside low-key lighting presents how dismal the show is
  • Not relatable, intimidating
  • Not an easy light watch
  • Extreme long shot of the bus falling of the edge of the cliff, we don't see any action

  • Metaphorical, images of the framed butterfly
  • The symbolic action of the butterfly is to inform the audience about themes of life and death - proairtic codes 
  • Dispite the boring intro, 'true' fans will follow through and watch the ending.

Canal+ is the the channel that produced and distributed Les Revenants

  • Canal+ is a very big channel
  • Its a premium channel which you have to pay for
  • French premium television channel launched in 1984
  • It is 100% owned by channel+ group which in turn is owned by Vivendi
  • Vivendi is a huge conglomerate, example of vertical intergration
  • The channel broadcasts several kinds of programming
  • Does not have advertising, except on free-to-air slots
  • Supporter of the hyprid broadcast broadband which promotes and establishes an open European standard for hyprid set-top boxes for the reception of broadcast TV and broadband
  • Since 2019 Canal+ began to expand their catalogue internationally through the international feed, cannal+ international.
