Les Revenants is about the interrelationship between sex and death 

Inevitability about grief, misery, losing a love one

Highly unconventional horror show but it is a conventional drama and mystery show

Many hegemonically attractive characters

Family aspect will attract a wider audience 

losing a loved one becuase it happens to everyone

More realistic show than humans

Binary opposition and drama between many characters 

This show was pertly funded by a french alp tourist board

Violence, girl gets stabbed in the tunnel late at night. Its a very detailed attach quite graphic

Sex, there is only one scene at the end of the episode but the characters are underage


Stuart Hall: In what ways can audience receive les revenants? 

Preferred negotiated, and oppositional readings

The preferred reading would be when people enjoy the mystery genre and themes shown

Some people will have oppositional readings where they do not enjoy any of the show perhaps because of the confusing narrative, or how it is subtitled and not in English.

Finally the negotiated reading would be were people may perhaps just like the soundtrack played and for that reason are watching the show, or one of their favorite actors is in it, this would be a negotiated reading.

Steve Neale: How does Les Revenants subvert and conform to generic conventions?

Genre is the style or category of a media product, a way of categorizing a film or TV show

Hybrid genres: are a combination of two or more genres 

Subgenre: is a genre within a genre


Les Revenants features a variety of generic paradigm of the horror/mystery aswell as the zombie genre 

Genre conventions are repeated and reinforced overtime and this is why producers use them as it allows them to target audiences.

  • Abandoned/desolate locations
  • few vs. many  
Horror:
  • Echoing 
  • Loud footsteps
  • suspenseful soundtrack

  • Slow cuts where there is time to speculate what is going to happen

  • arguments between characters
  • relationship issues
  • Death and sex
Les Revenants both subverts and conforms to generic conventions

It is a highly unconventional horror zombie show but it is a conventional drama and mystery

Reception Theory - Stuart Hall Otherwise known as the encoding and decoding model The ideological perspective of the producer is encoded in every media product, through media language. Every media product therefore demonstrates a mediated perspective - Bias According to Stuart Hall audience's don't just stop at encoding a media product, it goes a lot further because audiences can decode the media messages. -Preferred Reading/Dominant reading The audience agrees with the dominant ideological perspectives encoded by the producer - Oppositional reading The audience disagrees with the ideological pperpectives encoded by the producer - Negotiated reading The audience agrees with certain ideological aspects of the media product, while dismissing and disagreeing with others. Magazine - Next article analysis - 350ppm

Adbusters uses a lot of culture jamming by sub-verting or sabotaging mass media messages. 350ppm is talking about the amount of polution in the atmosphere. 350 is the safe level but scientists say we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts per million to below 350ppm. There is no anchorage to the image on the left hand side, no headline or subheading to tell you what they mean. This is similar to a lot of pages in the Adbusters magazine. This double page spread shows a binary opposition between the model on the left who is all glamorous and the beggar on the right siting on the ground who is homeless.
