Humans lesson 3
East Asia women to play Anita
Anita is 'the other' 'different'
Stereotypically they're over-sexulised
Often east Asian women are seen as being delicate and obedient to the media
Give further contrast between Anita and Hawkins family who are all white
Rare to see an east Asian character
Representation demonstrate the ideology of the producer
Watching a scene:
From the first opening scene after the beginning creates up to the part where they buy Anita and she offers to drive them home.
Textual Analysis:
Genre Conventions + codes: Intense music Shots of the synth - enigma code Glowing blue eyes The salesman winking as he gives him the 18+ card A normal busy house, lots of mess, dad on phone, cooking, multi-tasking - Alternative present genre
Camera Work: The part where they are wheeling Anita down starts at a low angle of the feet then gradually goes up Close up of phone messages from Laura Close up of the eyes and synths face as they unzip her
Lighting and colour:
Bright sunny day in the house natural light through the windows Then the juxtaposition of the dark shadowed warehouse and the corridor they wheel the synth down
Editing pace, types, continuity: Normal edit cuts 2 or 3 seconds
Narrative construction: Equilibrium - Busy normal day Disequilibrium - They go to get the synth Partial restoration equilibrium - She offers to drive home
Sound: Starts with dialogue with the dad on the phone, then more dialogue between him and Mattie. Then he tells Sophie their going shopping Music starts - quite dramatic, spooky, techno style More dialogue with music faintly in background
Mise-en-sence: Setting/location - the hawkins family home, a centre werehouse where you pick up synths, car park, Laura's hotel room Costume and dress - Joe is in noraml jeans and coat, sophie in normal clothes for her age, Mattie in pj's suggesting lazy teenager, Anita the synth wears a plain top and bottoms, very basic Hair and make-up - Anita has perfect make up and straight hair nothing is wrong with her
How is gender constructed in the buying Anita scene?
Anita's costume is very basic, and resembles nurse scrubs which is typically seen as a female job.
Many close-up/extreme close up of Anita's face (establish shot) asks the audience a hermenutic code; who is this beautiful girl, what is she and what does she do?
"Can we change her if she is not pretty" - this is said by Sophie who is only young. the audience this could be a Polysemic interpretation, where its both comedy but creepy at the same time. It is also sexulisation and objectifying Anita. Sophie wants her to be pretty, not in a sexulised way but because and her age she would probably want Anita to look more like a princess.
Anita looks identical in every scene, a hypereal expectation of beauty
"look soph', there's are really posh one" - this is said by Joe and is clearly again objectifying women.
Joe is Anita's primary user - he controls her. Joe is a non stereotypical man, he is the one out of the parents to stay at home, cook, and clean.
