Videogame 2 - specialized industry

How are videogames a specialized industry?

Videogames are totally different to any other type of industry

Interactivity:
Commanding audiences to press start is already interacting with the audience before the videogame even starts. It is not about just watching something, it is made for you to take part and interact making it more engaging than some other industry's perhaps.

Huge expenditure of specialized resources:
The people working at videogame studios each have their own specialized skills
they also have endless high tech equipment because of huge budgets

Higher RRP:
Recommended retail price
videogames are a lot more expensive than other media industry's like TV and film

Longer Length:
Much longer than TV shows and series. Films only last around 1 1/2 - 4 hours
many hours are spent on video games some tacking up to 200 hours to complete

Specific hardware or mutiplatform:
xbox's, playstation, Nintendo switch etc... are all specific consoles
You cant play games on all platforms as they come out on specific consoles only
but now a days a lot of games will come out on lots of different consoles so they can be played on various platforms

Videogame production

How are videogames typically produced and marketed by major studios?

Some of the main stages of production:

Concept art - sketching out initial ideas
Design - document that includes notes, drawings, run down of plot etc...
Coding - made by lots of mathematical coding
Testing - play through the game looking for any bugs or faults
Alpha and beta build
patching and maintenance - updates
Marketing and promotion - trailer releases and big events like E3

E3 and the role of trade shows

What is it?
E3, also known as the Electronic Entertainment Expo, is a trade event for the video game industry. It takes place every year around june at Los Angeles Convention CenterLeading computer and video game companies, business partners, media, industry analysts, and gamers from over 100 countries will take part in the event.

What are some significant events?
For three exciting days, leading-edge companies, groundbreaking new technologies, and never-before-seen products are showcased to the thousands of people that go.

Why is it so important to the videogame industry?
It is the biggest event known where new videogames can be showcased and shown to a huge audience. It is the most famous and arguably the most important mainstream videogame exposition in the world.

And what are some issues with it?
it could be the make or break of a new videogame being released, trailers are shown at E3 of upcoming new releases and their are a lot of journalists their so if it starts of with a bad review it might not do very well when actually released. Also games can get leaked and this is one of the biggest issues for video game developers.
