The Mirror Paper - Set Text
The Mirror
The Daily Mirror is a British daily national tabloid newspaper. Established in 1903, it is aimed at predominantly working class readership.
Point of View and Ideology:
There is reference to brexit on the front page and an article all about Theresa May losing the vote again. The article is dealing with a complex issue of brexit while the newspaper front page is being represented as more of a joke. The Headline 'Brexit Delay Mayhem' is anchoured by the serious look on May's face.
The Mirror expresses a left wing point of view. It is not so usual that we see a lot of political news in the mirror tabloid as this newspaper focuses on more popular press.
Ideological Perspectives:
Ideological Perspectives:
- People are fed up with Brexit
- Betting is ok and you can do it
- There interest is celebrity culture
Codes and conventions:
Roland Bathes theory of semiotic codes is shown in this front page. For example an enigma code is embedded throughout as the headlines and straplines create mystery and intrigue the reader to carry on reading the newspaper as it draws them in. A proairetic code used is the photo of Theresa May holding her hands up suggests she is surrendering and is vulnerable and weak.
Layout and design:
This double page spread grabs the readers attention. The large photo and large bold text shows how important this article is and is somthing you should read. The two other photos are of Jeremy Corben and Boris Johnson. this anchorages the text 'Theresa May loses another vote as MP's look to take control'
Photographs/Images:
The main images aren't typically 'nice' pictures of Theresa May therefore implying the fact that the writer isn't very fond of her. Additionally she isn't presented as being stereotypical ' pretty ' or ' perfect' making the audience less likely to be fond of her due to the fact that our generation are more influenced by social media influencers then important/ powerful people within our country. The small high angle shot on the front page of her suggests she is vulnerable. Theresa May is presented as not wearing a lot of makeup therefore conveying the fact that her main concern is our country and not herself.
Mise-en-scene:
The yes ' 242' and the no '391' is in red therefore drawing attention to the fact that there is more votes for no compared to yes. Additionally, the rest of the text is in black therefore emphasising the fact that people want to see her out of power. Mise-en-scene of the setting of parliament connotes formalness.
