Time is an American weekly news magazine and news webside published in New York City. It was founded in 1923 and for many years it was run by its influential co-founder Henry Luce.  

It covers a range of topics, including Politics, world, entertainment, tech, business, and health.

Codes and Conventions:
  • By only writing a select few of the 100 most influential people on the front page it creates an enigma code for the audience as they will want to know who the other people are so they will want to continue to look and read this magazine
  • The action code of having Dwayne Johnson (a famous figure) looking directly at the audience incises them into the magazine.


Layout and design:
  • All of the TIME magazines have this bold red border which makes them stand out and once you have seen one you will always know what magazine this is. 
  • It is all spaced out and clearly layed out
Composition:
  • Central title 
  • Central photo
  • Text is written in a column on the right hand side in rule of thirds composition
Font size/type/colour:
  • Very large title of the magazine 'TIME' in capital letters - this is in black to stand out the most
  • White smaller text till in block capitals
  • The 'influental' people mentioned in the magazine and written in a dark yellow colour which makes it more important than the smaller white text beneath it and also matches with some of the background colour. 
Images/Photographs:
  • one photograph taken of Dwayne Johnson in a studio setting with artificial lighting
  • The focus is purely on him as he is all in focus
  • the angle was taken at the same height as him but at a slight angle where he has turned his head to look at the camera
  • it is close up of mainly his face so it fills the frame
  • direct address as his looks directly down the camera
Mise-en-scene:
  • the colour has a hint of orange/yellow probably from the lighting and backdrop colour that is turquoise fading into yellow.
  • location is at a photography studio
  • He is wearing typical clothes but we can only see a bit of the top he is wearing
  • He has a chain necklace on
  • Also can see a part of a tattoo
  • he is most likely wearing some make up as this is a close up portrait
Language:
  • There is small text at the top on the red border with the date on the right hand side and on the left it says Double Issue
  • The headline is the title of the magazine then subheading is 'The 100 most influential people' along with more text describing a few of them 100 people.
  • The image is anchored by the text as it says Dwayne Johnson.

Magazine - Next article analysis - 350ppm

Adbusters uses a lot of culture jamming by sub-verting or sabotaging mass media messages. 350ppm is talking about the amount of polution in the atmosphere. 350 is the safe level but scientists say we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts per million to below 350ppm. There is no anchorage to the image on the left hand side, no headline or subheading to tell you what they mean. This is similar to a lot of pages in the Adbusters magazine. This double page spread shows a binary opposition between the model on the left who is all glamorous and the beggar on the right siting on the ground who is homeless.
