Beyonce Formation - CONTEXT

Image
Context There is a lot going on in Formation and they make use of lots of different techniques in order to create meaning for the audience. Formation has a clear political message to present to the audience. Key Terms: Intertextuality - Where a media product or text makes reference to another media product or text. Bricolage - Where a media product is constructed with iconography and conventions from many other texts, creating entirely new meanings. Often used when discussing postmodern media products. Screenshots of each different aesthetic and visual styles in the video there are many different styles and themes throughout and it is far from anything like a normal dance routine in a studio New Orleans and bounce music That B.E.A.T  What specific elements of iconography did the producers of Form...

Formation - analysis, themes and representation

Image
Context Formation, lead single for the album Lemonade, was released the day before BeyoncĂ© performed at the Super Bowl final in February 2016. The Formation music video, directed by Melina Matsoukas, was released with the song. This music video has won numerous awards including a Clio Award for Innovation and Creative Excellence in a Music Video at the 2016 awards, and has been nominated in the music video category at the 59th Grammy Awards. The video is set against the backdrop of the flooding in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and the associated racial tension in America, and also draws historical parallels with references to racism and slavery. In what ways are the themes of conflict encoded in this video? What media language is used to show conflict?   The themes of conflict is shown especially in this shot where there is a line of white police officers facing a black child in a hoodie.     The grafiti on the wall also links to the rac...

Riptide music video set text - initial analysis

Riptide  is an indie pop song written and performed by Australian artist Vance Joy, and was released in 2013. Textual analysis Codes and Conventions: The video subverts to the normal music video conventions in a lot of ways however one convention that is followed is there are strong relatives between the visuals and the lyrics.  Subversive elements include a complete lack of performance, and deliberately poor lip syncing.  Camera Work and Editing: Rapid shots and fast past with hard jump cuts  High camera angle to victimize the women in this video even more and make them look vulnerable along with their scared facial expressions which anchouges this message of objectifying and victimizing woman Some of the changes of shots are beat matched but a lot of them are not  The shot of the woman singing is a much longer shot than a lot of the others this is suggesting they are leaving us as the audience to see her up close for a long time. Repetition...

Riptide - Representation of woman

Image
Screenshots - Symbolism and representation of women Riptide is very different to other pop music videos, one of the main differences is it doesn't show the artist at all. This makes the video highly unconventional How are women represented in this video?                                     The woman are represented as being vulnerable as if they are in distress and pain which is shown through the first image and the image where she is tied up to the tree using rope.  But they are also some shots where there are represented as more powerful individuals. For example this image below makes her look like a model with a glowing face. Here the woman is being represented in a sexualised way   What is the symbolism of the  mise en scene  of the rope and the dental brace? It shows how the woman is being trapped but she is escaping on her own. again...
